Spring Cap

It's still very cold so a warm hat is still part of our outdoor clothing at the moment. This is a cap that I drafted a pattern for couple of week ago. It has a wide slim peak and a crown that moulds to the head but is definitely not a baseball cap. The cap is made from boucle wool and has a vintage petersham ribbon trim secured to the hat with a lovely flower button.
I have also made one in a soft coral pink lambswool and intend to make them in lighter fabrics as the weather gets warmer.

Rainy Day Bag

This fabric is great for rain hats and bags it's a p.v.c. backed cotton in Charcoal grey I also have some in stone, raspberry and olive.
It's strong and showerproof so perfect for the u.k. island weather (rain) ! which we get frequently.
The handles in metalic leather make it soft to grip and it's edged and trimmed in a vintage petersham ribbon.
With a hard base it can take a little weight and the leather handles are lovely to hold.

Just Cruising

In January I often have orders for cruise hats. One to keep the sun off your face and one to fold in your bag in case of a shower of rain.
The trilby with a wide brim in a fancy straw will not fold up but will provide good shade, the rain hat has been made from pva backed cotton in a breezy print and will fold up.
So if you have a cruise booked you know where to come.!!
There is also a little hair clip being made for the evening, you never know when the captain might invite you to dine.

New Year at the Hat Shop

Happy new year, my first job before I re-open on Friday is to paint [with help] the inside of the shop.
The workroom was given a fresh coat of paint last January so that will be fine for now. I have a large amount of small and med sized windows so lots of fiddly bits.! Also new patterns to make. Enough to keep me busy.
I will take a few pictures of the work as I go.

MASATO DRESS

I first found the designs of Masato on Twitter where I had my first glimpse of his terrific designs. Since then I have been following the Japanese designer on line until a few weeks ago when I was able to meet him while he was in Yorkshire with his partner Mike.
Between us we decided that as Masato will be at Manchester Fashion Week in April next year it would be great for me to have the dress in my shop and spread the Masato word in the north of England.
It is hand made and as beautiful inside as out and I have taken a close up of the floral fabric which is silk.

These gorgeous photos (first 3) have been take by Ed Chadwick who runs Snug Gallery here in Hebden Bridge and is my shop neighbour.

Blue Tweed Check

I couldn't resist buying this small piece of wool tweed even though there was only enough for this clutch bag and a couple of other items.
The colours are just beautiful, the little change purse or card holder is an added extra surprise inside.

It's just been put out for sale in the shop, I wonder who might find it under their Christmas tree.?

Pink Lambswool Liberty print slippers

There seems to be quite a few little people in my life at the moment so I have made a couple of pairs of lambswool slippers. I think I bought the pattern from Etsy quite some time ago but this is the first time I have used it. Pink lambswool is lined with liberty print tana lawn cotton and I have edged them with blanket stitch.
The pink beads are her initial Eloise. The other pair are in deep blue and have gone to the Netherlands for baby Noam.

Embroidered Silk Clutch with French Knots

Sometimes a very simple design looks so good just because the fabric is so beautiful. This simple clutch is just that, made from embroidered silk with french knots. I have lined it in smooth dupion silk too.

November Treats

Wool is great to work with I love lambswool especially for bags and small accessories and here are a few that I have made one which has a knitted panel at the front.
Plus lovely hand knitted wrist warmers in alpaca, mohair and wool with button and flower trims.
I will be celebrating my 6th year here in the shop and on Dec 3rd will be holding my Christmas Fair with Snug gallery next door and Radiance lighting a few doors down the road. So I am making lots of hats and other goodies just perfect for that hand made present that someone will just love.

The Humble Beret

I am working on lots of berets at the moment as I am opening an online shop. There will be three collections of berets, some to wear for work, some for the weekend and some for anytime you like. I'll keep you posted when it's ready to go. I'm trying different backgrounds for my pictures at the moment . I think the darker one works the best.

Tweed Hat With Ear Flaps

Theres nothing like a wool hat to keep you warm and with added ear flaps this hat will do just that.
It has a vintage buckle at the front and fits into the nape of your neck keeping it nice and snug.
I drafted the patern using a single piece that is cut on the fold of the fabric, and as there was only a small piece left over I made a wallet/purse to match.
Not everyone's cup of tea in shape but it's a good job we all like something different.

Animal Print Bag

It's great to have a bag that can take all the things you need but not weigh you down. This vibrant zebra print in fake fur is so soft and light, weighs very little, has loads of space and with a sturdy webbing strap and hard base can hold a lap top or i pad plus all your extras.The silk lining gives it a touch of luxury and adds to the overall look.
There's also a beret or Russian style hat to match in the same material if you feel the cold.
This is the very best fake fur I have ever found, so I am very happy I was able to buy it in a few other designs which include a leopard print.

Felted wool and silk clutch bag

As well as all the hat making here at Hat Therapy there are always fabrics that I decide to make in to a bag. Very often there is a hat to go with it but not this time. This clutch bag has been made from some very unusual felted wool, I took a close up of the fabric to try and show the details, it fades from light to dark from top to bottom. Inside I have lined it with a lovely embroidered silk and added a small trim on the front in the same fabric. The metal frame is a gun metal grey and is just the right tone to show off the felt.

Winter Headwear

We all wish winter wouldn't come around so soon but there is always the plus of winter dressing.
Hats always come in handy when it's cold especially if you have to wait for a bus or train on your way to and from work.
I am busy making lots of winter hats, like the felt cloche above and the simple cord beret with a vintage buckle and as it's time for pulling out your warmer coat, why not add a great looking hat.
Here in the u.k. we have been promised a week of warmer weather but you can never tell till you wake up.

Felt Feathers

I made some felt feathers many months ago, but only used them for a few trims. However in the week I needed to make something in felt for a lady to wear with a trouser suit and anything too fancy looked wrong, she liked the idea of feathers but they were too light and had decided she would like to have something made in felt. Hey presto felt feathers came to the rescue. I used two colours to tie in with her outfit and covered a headband in silk.I did have to sew a fine wire on the reverse side in order that I could twist the felt into a feather like shape. The result was very striking. Here's a few pictures of some I have made since then, I added small beads to two and also made a couple of leaves.

Warm Winter Knitted Hats

It's been too cold for early September, so everyone has been pulling out their warmer coats and for those of us who love our hats it's the perfect opportunity for a new everyday warm hat.
No need to pass on style either, I always have a lovely selection of berets and simple pull on knitted styles in the shop.
All beautifully made by my sister, in wool or wool blends. The top hat is a 1920's style cloche with little flaps that sit out to the side when worn.The beret has a vintage buckle and liberty print trim. Lastly the fine 4 ply beret has a pretty cabled band and button holes down one side to which I have added little vintage shell buttons for fastening.
So if you are shy about wearing a hat try a simple little warm hat at first and before you know it you will have your own collection. Keep warm.!

Lambswool Headband

Headbands are really popular at the moment and I have made lots of styles and variations for the shop, this one was made from a piece of vibrant pink lambswool. There's a vintage button on the end of each twist and the knot section gives it a little height. To cover the band I cut some bias strips and wound them tightly from end to end creating a bandaged effect.

Autumn felts

As autumn pulls closer I am now working more with warmer fabrics, and although I still have the last of my summer weddings this weekend, one of my window displays is of a little felt 40's inspired hat worn with a hat elastic and trimmed in Liberty of London tana lawn cotton print.

I have used a vintage buckle to create a tail of fabric that spills out over the eye.

Liberty tana lawn is so fine it's almost like silk and so will drape very well on any base.

I am making lots of new pill box hats and everyday cloches ready for those cooler days ahead.

Neopolitana Ice Cream Hat

A classic hat for a formal event is trimmed with a wide petersham ribbon bow. It's made from fine straw in two colours and a silk band in ivory, so could be worn with any of the three tones.

The difference between petersham and gross grain is that petersham has a wavy edge and gross grain a straight edge. Milliners use petersham to sew into the brim of hats sewing every third ridge, this creates the band that is worn close to the forehead.

Easy sew trim

Last week I went along to a 1940's event at the Hebden Bridge W.I. which was great fun with victory rolls and kiss curl hair do's and me with vintage inspired hats and headbands.

This was a little easy to sew project that I made to show how easy it is to make a little trim to add to your hat using very little. (as would have been true in the 40's)

Made with 3 biot feathers, a vintage button, petersham ribbon and a brooch pin.

When it's sewn together add it to a hat or coat collar for an instant trim.

Softly curved wire trim

I found this soft silk and cotton covered wire at a ribbon suppliers and have wanted to use it for some time. This large navy blue saucer gave me the perfect opportunity to create a simple yet effective trim. I also had a small piece of taffeta to use as a trim on the mini silk clutch bag and the hat.
The little clutch bag has pleats in the front and the back to create a flared bottom, just enough for essentials.

Glossy Black Classic

A 1920's inspired brimless hat [not for you if you have a round face] with a beautiful glossy black feather, wrapped with lilac dupion silk and you can just see the white para sisal blocked crown at the top. It was teamed with a black suit and lilac accessories. The lady also found a pair of 'Mary Jane' style shoes in a vintage shop that fit too.! Normally they are about size 3 if you are lucky.

Felted Wraps

These gorgeous hand felted wraps are the work of a talented lady named Sara who lives in Yorkshire and came to show me her collection a few weeks ago.
I am now stocking them in the shop and they are really causing a stir.
Made form wool and muslin cloth they have been likened to a piece of sculpture, which I feel is very true, they are a triangular shape and come with a detachable corsage which you pin to secure in a shape you desire.
They can be worn in a variety of ways and come in a kaleidoscope of colours.
I have sold a few already and look forward to seeing lots more of Sara's work. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

1940's Beret Glamour

I have entered a competition with this little hat and although there was no time for research and ordering of perfect materials I managed to select enough from the workroom to produce this hat. Heres Lucy of Lucy and the Caterpillar fame modeling my vintage inspired 1940's beret.

A hand rolled organza bow has been stitched in silver thread which is secured with a vintage diamante buckle,then the fine silver feather sweeps from behind. The corded lace motif I hand cut from a piece of bridal fabric and stiffened, then I have sewn a wire spine to be able to lift and twist it into position. Lastly some lighter navy organza ribbon was added to the spine.

Lined in navy silk and worn with a hat elastic it should be the type of hat a lady wears every day.! A big thank you to Shelly of Toast who yet again took these terrific photos.

Jewel coloured Pill Box Hat

A mixture of pinks,mustards and greens where put together to create a little jewel of a pill box.

Raw silk gave everything a beautiful glow, veiling added texture and bead work plus a quill added drama.

The clutch bag was made in matching silk and when put together with an Amanda Wakeley 1940's inspired dress it was a killer combination. It will be off to Ascot ladies day next week so lets hope the sun shines so we all get to see more gorgeous hats and accessories.

Vintage Hat Prints

You may remember that a while ago I bought myself some vintage prints, well here they are framed and displayed in all their glory in the shop.

As you can see I have a green selection sitting on my desk at the moment but any colour scheme seems to suit them so next week when I change items around I don't think it will matter at all.

Vintage Inspiration

Here are four vintage inspired pieces made from silk and velvet, all on wide toothed combs so you do need to position them in the right place to get the best look, I also put them on head bands.
Some ladies just don't like the feel of a headband and so a lesson or two before leaving the shop gives them a guide for positioning. (I even take a quick picture on their phone sometimes as then they have a record too.)
Each of these could be worn a.m. or p.m. it would just depend on your outfit.
With so many vintage styled parties at the moment I make sure I have lots of styles ready to buy in the shop. Pop in and try some on if you live close enough.!

Race Day

Just finished and off to the races tomorrow. It's one of those tones that change in the light and can appear very different. Always tricky when looking for accessories.

However help was at hand in the form of two beautiful shades of silk.

This client also had a silk clutch bag made in the lighter silk of the petals and her shoes were almost the same colour.

Once everything was tried on together the combination was perfect.

Hope she backs a winner.

Light as a feather

Sometimes I have clients who don't like to wear a hat that has been blocked or moulded into shape as they feel it's too heavy and spoils their hair.!! So the answer to having a larger brimmed hat without the weight is to make the hat from fabric

It can still have plenty of structure and the brim can tilt back just the same as a blocked hat so there's no compromise on shape or style.

This is an embroidered linen in apple green which has a matching wide slim clutch bag.

It has an oval brim wider at the side and shorter at the front and back with a pork pie crown.

You can wear this hat for hours and hardly feel you have anything on your head.

Silk is another fabric I use for similar shapes but you could use any fabric at all.

So the next time you have a day at the races or an event where you want your hat on for a longer period of time think about something light and breezy.

wedding window

Almost everyone I know watched part of the Royal Wedding last week, I really enjoyed all the hats of course as well as the fabrics, shapes, colours and accessories.

I wanted to have a vintage feeling to one of my shop windows just prior to the wedding and to achieve this, wrapped some silk around some mdf that had been cut into a dressing table mirror shape.

Then I pinned pattern pieces, photographs taken by Shelly at Toast and a beautiful hand embroidered lavender heart by carolinewattsembroidery .

On one side I have a hat block,scissors,pins,tape measure and threads with a sign that reads 'where design meets traditional skills'.

All the hats where of a neutral tone, two pill box, one with veiling, one made from window sinamay and a window sinamay brimmed hat with a silk organza crown.

I did have some green foliage and a tulip but that wilted very quickly as it was very sunny.

The only problem has been trying to get a great photograph through the glass.!

I am going to keep the display for another week but change the hats for bridal headdresses and accessories.

Silk twists

Here are a couple of silk twists with veiling one with a beaded trim and quill the other with a feather and silk covered button.
This shape has proved to be very popular as it's easy to wear and has quite a presence.
There's a distinct 1940's flavour to the design but it can also be worn with a classical outfit.
It is worn on the left side on the face with the point ending just on the cheekbone.

Hot Pink & orange duo

This beautiful shot silk has been made to match a pink and orange linen jacket which has an appliqued pattered design, so I have repeated it in the silk.

It's so vibrant but works perfectly as an alternative to a hat or smaller headpiece.

I have to say the lady was ''tickled pink' with her headband and her husband will wear the brooch on his lapel.

Pretty in Pink Paisley Linen

I have always loved the paisley pattern since I was a little girl and still buy fabric when ever I spot some.

This lovely linen print has made a great summer duo in beret and bag, perfect for the summer months to team with other linen items.

The beret has a vintage glass button while the bag has a mother of pearl.

Vintage Marie Claire

Marie Claire was first published in France in 1937 and was distributed every Wednesday.

These vintage editions have been loaned to me by Amy who owns Ribbon Circus which sells a host of gorgeous haberdashery.

They really are a wonderful selection and it is hard to pick a favourite page or design.

Fantastic inspiration for anyone who designs and makes clothes or hats or anything with a vintage look.

I already have a few ideas for new hat shapes so you will no doubt see them here very soon.

Chocolate Dream

Lots of ladies don't want a large brimmed hat or even a hat that covers their hair so a small but distinctive piece is often the answer. Here is chocolate fine straw toque hand blocked and then hand pleated, I pop bull clips onto each pleat to keep them sharp.

The shape would come under 'toque' mostly without a brim and a circle that fits close to the head.

The trim which is fine braided straw has been sewn into a simple bow and a couple of vintage beads added to the center.

A corn yellow silk binding and a wide tooth comb bound in organza ribbon is all that is needed to finish this lovely little hat.

Cream and Ivory Birdcage veils

As Easter weddings draw ever closer I am busy sewing lots of bridal headdresses.

Merry widow veiling is very pretty and actually comes in many colours from black to hot pink.

The first pictures are of an ivory and shell pink rose, that nestles in an ivory birdcage veil.

The second a cream and ivory silk disk trimmed with swarovski crystals and pearls.

Both are on headbands which have been covered in matching silk.

Tip Top mini Topper

My mini top hat block is very beautiful even before you use it to make your hat.

Here I have blocked the crown in an open weave natural straw and the brim in pari sisal fine straw.

To create an unusual look I have pulled out some of the woven straw in the crown which has given it a distinctive look.

Each piece has then been dressed in the lovely plaid silk and I added a few feathers to finish off the trim.

It has only been in the shop for a couple of days and everyone has fallen in love with it.

I wonder where it will make it's debut.?

Felted Roses

New additions to the shop are hand crocheted then felted rose corsages and long rope scarves or lariats, made by Heartfelt.

They make a beautiful present or keepsake for weddings, and the long scarf is wonderful for dressing up a simple outfit.

I have put them into my window and they make a lovely spring display. Lots of people stopping to admire them already.

If you look closely you will see they are delicately beaded too.

Liberty Lovely

I just love Liberty prints, they are so pretty and super fine. This blocked straw beret which was part of an earlier post has now been finished and trimmed with a liberty print flower and small quill.
To make the cotton hold it's shape I brushed it with a fabric stiffner and then when dry curled it with hot irons.
Once it was stiffened I then oversewed the edges in pink thread.

I have also used the same fabric to edge the inner side of the beret and then added a comb which I have bound with organza ribbon.

All you need is somewhere to go.!!

Linen and Lace

After finding this pretty piece of net/lace fabric I have made a clutch bag by backing it with interfaced linen. This gives it a firm platform to sit on and makes it possible to use as a bag.

It is only small but you would get lipstick, keys and a little money with room to spare.

The cocktail hat is given form by using brim reed which is a light plastic wire and allows you to manipulate lighter fabrics into firm structures.

I also made a made corsage by pleating the net and cutting away small areas around the edge, before securing the center with beading in the same way as the hat.

This has a pretty feminine look and could be used for weddings or the races.

It's just a shame it didn't come in any other colours.! I'll keep looking you never know what you might find when fabric hunting.

Spring Colours

I am very busy blocking crowns and brims in lots of lovely spring colours which is a breath of fresh air from all the darker winter tones.

The pink hat will become a straw beret,there's a couple of pill box shapes a large lilac brim which I will cut into an unusual shape.

There is also a pill box shape blocked out of window sinamay, very light to wear.

To construct the hats you work on the brim first then attach the crown.

Simple as that sounds it can take quite a few hours, so I better go and get cracking.

Pink hat and cupcakes

I made the pink felt hat which was very bright but perfect for the photographs, and even though it was a cold January day there was nothing dull about this wedding.

From the bouquet to the cupcakes it all looked fab.

HAT SKETCHES

I have been thinking for a while that although I use my Hat Therapy logo for most things it would be nice to have a different price tag for my hats and accessories.
My labels are woven and are stitched into all my work.The logo is used on my business cards and price tags in the shop, but I think it's time for a change so I have been sketching a few ideas.
I use a hammered ivory card to print on so it looks fairly crisp.
[Sorry to have taken these pictures in the evening hence their darker appearance.]
As I will be opening an online beret shop very soon I am also working on logo and packaging etc so all this sketching will come in very handy.
Not sure which I will use as yet and I may make a few changes but I will see how I feel about them after a few days.
I am a very prone to doodles, but managed to keep control of my pencil.!

A tale of two trilbys

Since starting work after the Christmas break I have been very busy. After our cold December it's nice to be thinking of spring colours, these two hats are for a lady who lives in Italy the trilby crown is blocked from fine straw and the brim in pinopok. The buttons are made from mussel shell and the blue fabric is a linen /viscose.
She will have no trouble shading her eyes with these wide brims, especially the linen print. {last photo }
I have also transformed my workroom by moving everything around including shelving. I even cut a small slice off my cutting table to make it fit it's new space.!
It's all go now working on everything in readiness for the spring/summer months, but of course I have to keep up with my orders so much plate spinning required.
I have quite a few plans for the business this year so I will be back soon with more news.

To Block a Cloche

The CLOCHE is one of my favorite hat shapes. This grey felt cloche with a flower trim is blocked as a one piece instead of a crown and a brim.

The crown block is pushed down inside the brim block as the last picture shows.

Sounds tricky but with a little patience you can produce a really lovely shape.

Once the felt is taken off the block you can then steam the brim wider, then trim into any shape you desire.

A brim reed is stitched around the brim edge to keep it in shape.

Winter Wedding

This is for a wedding on saturday so I hope they can make it to their venue.!! Very cold here in the U.K. at the moment.

It has been made with tangle tuft sinamay which is great for hand sculpting and blocking into twists and turns. The bride has very dark hair so this piece stands out very nicely.

It is worn on the right with the plume of feathers falling over the back of the head.

Little pearls and a vintage button for something 'old' complete the focal point.

Christmas at Hat Therapy

I wanted to decorate the windows this year a little differently so I found some cut out letters on the Internet, sprayed them with floral paints and decorated then with a permanent gold pen.

They had to be drilled with a fine drill bit so I could tie them together with fine ribbon, I then hung them on fish wire.

There are little lights on the raised area where I display my hats etc in the window which twinkle as it gets darker.

The wire wreath I also sprayed purple and added a copper ribbon which really stands out on my black door.

I am very pleased with the overall effect, hope you agree.
I will be having a celebration at the shop on Saturday as it will mark my fifth year of hatting here in Hebden Bridge, so if you are in the area pop in and join me. Cheers.

NOIR

Two black peach bloom felt cocktail hats that were ordered for weddings this week have now left the shop and will be worn this weekend, but I just managed to get Grace to model them for me before they disappeared for good.
Peach bloom felt is so soft and moulds gently into wonderful shapes, but is particularly good in smaller hats as you can cut really great shapes as you see in the hat with the black and white feather.
I have made a few more felt hats, as this week I was part of a charity fashion show close to home so when they return I will take some pictures and pop them on the blog.

Perfect Print

Animal prints are everywhere this season and I have made quite a few pieces for weddings/cocktails in the last few weeks.
This one which is made from coconut fibers, silk and leopard print felt, sits just over the eye but is so light it's very easy to wear.
You don't feel as though you are peering through a heavy fringe.
Perfect for the rest of the evening when your event starts around 6pm
or you could just wash up in it.!!!

Claret cashmere

This lovely rich claret cashmere has been used to make several hats. Here is a simple pork pie hat with a turned back brim and a beret.I have also made several cloche hats.

Cashmere is so very soft, warm and luxurious which is why most people just love it.

The beret has a petersham ribbon trim and the hat a toggle button. I wanted the fabric to take all the glory so kept the trims simple.

The roomy shoulder bag is made from a wool tweed and has a linen lining.

Lots of colours can be teamed with claret, I think a pair of magenta leather gloves would look

great.What would you choose.?

Softly Felted

Winter is just around the corner so we are all starting to think about warmer clothing and accessories. Here is a hand knitted wool bag that I felted. {washed in very hot water}
The bag shrinks drastically when washed so remember to make your bag much bigger than you intend it to be.
I searched thought my materials for something to make the handles from and decided that this lovely pink leather/ suede would be just perfect, strong, soft and striking.
I added the large vintage buttons and a hard card base that I covered in a matching pink silk.
Overall it's very soft and the leather adds a touch of luxury, a great winter bag.

Classic Navy

Classic Navy never seems to be out of style for very long.Here I have made a pill box hat with a pearl trim and soft veiling and a blocked beret that has a smart chequered quill and slightly heavier veiling
The pill box is made of sinamay while the beret is fine straw so both are very light and make them a good choice for an indoor event.
Team either of these hats with a vintage suit or classic dress for a touch of that Jackie O killer style.

Something to shout about

Here are two hats that were made with one thing in mind 'PHOTOGRAPH ME'.
The one worn by a former Miss England at Ascot a couple of years ago, found it's way into lots of newspapers, the second is still awaiting it's debut.
It's great fun when you are commissioned to make these P.R. hats but they do cause a few headaches like making sure the plane will stay in place or your pork pie won't slide off the side of the hat.
In the middle photograph the cream hat is made from felt and has two wings with central cuts supported by black wire.Once that stage was complete the very elaborate trimming began.
The pork pie was made from washing up sponges and lots of small pieces of tissue paper,one lady actually thought it was a real pork pie.No smell should have given it away.!
I don't have any other hats like these in the pipeline at the moment but as both of these came completely out of the blue you just never know what you might be asked to make next.

Rich Warm Tones

So far September seems to have given us a very mixed bag of weather so I have been making as many types of hats a possible for the shop.This is a wool beret trimmed in cashmere.The rich tan complements the grey wool cloth and is really soft against the head.
The beret has an 8 sectioned crown top stitched in grey cotton.
The amber beads add depth with their rich glow, making an everyday hat just that little bit special.
The clutch bag is made from the same cashmere with a lambswool tweed edge.Three little shell buttons create detail in the center and a magnetic clasp keeps everything safe inside.
Today I have bought quite a few more pieces of cashmere in some gorgeous colours so will be adding to my soft winter collection soon.

Pink ruffles and dress clips

Two hats for the same lady,one for a wedding and one for the races.

The black hat made from pinopok sinamay has a vintage hat pin and two vintage dress clips as well as a gorgeous feather, great for the races as it is light and easy to wear.

The black straw hat has a pink silk ruffle and black woven bead trim.

Both styles are very dramatic which she loved, and as she is a new client I hope she back for more head turning hats.

Summer weddings are all over now and the race calendar is coming to its end so I am now making a lot more autumnal headwear, but I love working with felt and warmer fabrics so I will be back with winter creations soon.

Little Black Beret

Almost September so it's time to add a few slightly warmer hats to the stock in the shop.

This Pure cotton hand knitted beret will just fit the bill when there's a nip in the air.

The crocheted trim of simple flowers and vintage buttons just adds enough detail to make a simple hat look very appealing.

Lady wears feathers

I was pleased to find out where my vintage hat prints came from and also thrilled to be offered this wonderful print of a woman wearing plumes of black feathers in her hat.
They all came from a 1930's catalogue
" Album du Figaro" La Mode de printemps.
Originally it cost 250 francs and is full of wonderful images of the fashion of the era.
There are quite a few more so I may be tempted to buy again.!
The hat in the print has glorious black feathers so I have taken some pictures of a few of my feathers which I am using at the moment for various pieces.
These chequered feathers are achieved with a burning technique and are known as brulee, just like the dessert.

Peacock

Peacock feather's are just so beautiful and I love to use them with a contrasting silk,this one is a double thread silk of peacock blue and red giving it a deep rich hue.

This piece sits to the right side of the head sloping down past the right eye.

The vintage button used to anchor the two pieces together is a soft pearl grey and very beautiful.

I have sewn the silk twists on to a headband so there are no worries about positioning, just pop on and go.!

Take a brim and a crown

When you make a hat by hand each part is blocked separately.
This is where you dampen the material then steam and stretch it gently over a hat block (mould)
When dry and removed it is then cut to the desired shape.
The brim is worked on by adding brim reed around the edge to keep it's shape and stop it flopping, then this is covered with fabric.
Here you sew so that the stitches can not be seen.Tricky stuff.
Petersham ribbon is sewn to the head size around the inside of the crown and the label added.
Next attention is turned to the crown this is the part that wraps around the head the top is called the tip.
A lining is made to fit inside the hat then the brim and crown are joined together.
Now you create a band to cover your workings and add the trim. Simple.!
This hat is a very simple design as the suit it will be worn with looked better without too much detail.

At the moment I have quite a list of items to source and buy for several different orders.
I have been very successful in the last few days finding this vintage buckle,brooch,large beaded button and two pieces of embroidered cotton.
As fabric is so hard to find these days I feel very happy with myself, I now need some aubergine fine wool cloth,cherry red wool cloth and Lilac/blue buttons.
After that I think I should add a Gin & Tonic.

Vintage Hat Prints

I found these prints last week at a local antique fair and it appears that they are taken from a book as there are page numbers at the corners of each one.
I would love to know where the book came from and the title but there was no information from the seller.
Now to decide where to hang them once I find two frames.? I do have a nice space in the shop so maybe that will be their new home for a while then I might just have them at home to enjoy them myself.

Vintage buttons & cocktail frippery

As you may have noticed I very often use vintage buttons on my hats and accessories, as I just love them for their simplicity and beauty.
This morning I went to a local antique fair where I found these Delicious little gems, plus two vintage prints of hats.
All in all a very good outing as I have most of my materials sent via post or courier and getting a pass to leave the workshop gets very difficult these days.!!
The material pictured above is crin, which comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it twists and turns to create great shapes, of course it does need a little persuasion.
I will take photographs of my hat prints as they too are just delightful and I will be torn between hanging them in the shop or just keeping them for myself at home.
I have some nice ideas for my buttons already but I'll keep you posted on that later.

Knitted Fabric Bags

This is made from cut strips of fabric sewn together to make a ball of fabric yarn. You can then knit it just like any other yarn to make just about anything.The bigger sized needles the looser the finished look, smaller needle and it will have a much tighter finish.
I used very large telegraph pole like one's to make the larger piece, very strange to use at first.!!
My fabrics are silk and cotton in various greens, but you could use anything really just as long as you can make one continuous length.
Both clutch bags have silk linings and are really quite strong, so will take all you need and a bit more.
I then trimmed each bag with a large green glass bead.
So try it with an unwanted garment or long forgotten something in the back of your wardrobe, start on a small project till you get the hang of it.Happy knitting.

Model Magic

A new web site seems a great idea then you realize how much work they take.!
However I am getting there as they say, so hopefully very soon I will be able to show off my new hats in all their glory.

Little Red Cloche

This lovely red fine straw cloche hat is a real winner in the cute stakes, so far just about everyone popping into the shop has fallen in love with it.
I also made one in cream but that went to a wedding in California a while ago.
I took this photograph for my new web site which is slowly making progress.

Very Beret

Luxury leopard print in velvet, very simple and very soft.
People seem to love animal print and are drawn to anything made in a print fabric or really dislike it.
When ever I make an animal print hat it always sells very quickly, normally a women who will walk straight in, stride towards it, try it on and then say "I'll take this please".
The napa leather covered buttons and wide silk band add a luxury touch, to a very special little beret.

Right now I have a long list of orders for weddings as you would expect, but it's nice when someone just pops in the shop for an everyday hat,without need for an occasion.
Why not have a fab rain hat,sun hat,dog walking hat etc.
All you need is a great shape that suits you, pick a fabric you love and before you know it you'll be sporting your new creation.
A few compliments never go amiss do they.

Cool cotton holiday hats

Summer holidays are now just around the corner, so the ever popular pull on cotton hat is now back in the shop priced £40.
These and others have been in the window over the weekend and proved very popular.
All hand knitted or crocheted [by my sister] in 100% raw cotton with different beaded trims.
Cotton comes in many colours, so some hats have been made in bright sunny shades.
This little collection above somehow reminds me of the beach.
So if you are heading off on holiday soon don't forget your hat.!

Summer Straw Boaters

Summer is not far away!! we hope, so across the country there will be lots of little girls popping on their summer school hats.These are off to Chepstow House School in London.
I have been busy sewing ribbon on to 30/40 hats last week, then I will be making cherry red wool berets ready for Sept.You can spot them here. http://www.chepstowhouseschool.co.uk/About/About/

Topping the style stakes with a mini top hat

My lovely mini top hat block creates a terrific shape. Measuring 16cm across the top of the crown it's big enough to be a hat rather than a fascinator.
This one in black straw has a single quill, merry widow veiling and is trimmed in black silk.
Fun, shapely and just a little daring, perfect for head turning glances.
Now ready for popping into it's little red box and then off to the races tomorrow.
Lets hope my client has picked a winner.

Wedding hats required

Invitations to weddings seem to be dropping through peoples letter boxes at an alarming rate at the moment,some people are getting them in threes.!
What to wear,what to buy, should I wear this twice.?
Hats however are definitely on the list of 'to wear' so with lots on the go at the moment here is one for the lady who drops into the shop for something to go with a black and or pink dress for this Saturday if possible .....sorry I know it's a bit short notice.!!!
Which is when I say 'would this do the trick'.?
There's more in the workroom under construction, you never know I might just get an invite myself.

Pinstripe Hat

This simple yet striking hat really reminds of Mary Quant's designs of the 60's.
You could just about wear it to anything or nothing as it lends itself to the wearers whim.
City smart or boho chic the choice is yours.
The large flower trim is detachable and can be pinned on to your coat/bag etc when you don't need your hat.
I wonder if Mary would approve.?

Vintage hat hire

Here's a beautiful picture of one of my small collection of vintage hats which I hire for £35 per week plus a £50 deposit.
Pictured here is a 1920's original bell cloche with velvet flower and a 1950's straw cap with ribbon and pearl trim. I also have a 1902's headband, bag and gloves.
They knew how to dress in those days didn't they.?

A day at the races

The racing season has begun and Ladies' day is the one time you can dress to impress, in any style you like.There's no limits when it comes to colour or shape.
Only the Royal enclosure at Ascot will require you to cover your head, it's a no no to flirty fascinators here.
I am making some terrific shapes for the races at the moment, whilst also adding to my cocktail hat selection with options for last minute.com ladies.If you know what I mean.
Retro inspired pieces are still a hot ticket this year, lets hope mine will be winners in the style stakes.

Rock and Roll Wedding

This is the second part of the fashion shoot featuring two alternative wedding headdresses.
Not for the faint hearted but sure to please those wanting something very different.
The make-up was fantastic don't you think.?
They where taken at the Adelphi in Leeds, a grade Two listed building full of nostalgia.

Soda Fountain

Definitely not your average wedding photo shoot, but Shelly of Toast had an idea to produce a different view of that special day and went all out to get it.
This Felt Soda Fountain headpiece with white veiling and vintage buttons stands proud and regal on the models wild hair.
It was made by hand cutting two identical felt pieces which were sandwiched together with a wire frame, allowing me to bend it slightly into a pleasing shape, then sewing it all together with fine stab stitching.Sounds painful but hard to see so the perfect stitch.
I don't get to make too many pieces like this and I loved the end result.
Maybe there will be a bride out there daring enough to want this look too.We'll see.!

Most of us just love a new bag and I am busy making a few at the moment.It's nice to be using fresh spring fabric's, floral, stripes and linens.
They always make great presents too.

Softly folded cream felt

I am often asked what type or style of hat do I like to wear? Well this is it simple,strong clean lines and holds it's own amongst the bigger hats.
This is the second hat for the exhibition in Manchester's platt Hall.
I went there on Thursday and it was so beautiful inside as it has just been lovingly renovated.
Made from peach bloom felt,wire and vintage buttons my hat is so simple but very striking.The cut out piece with inserted wire helps the edge to tilt upwards.
Simplicity is often the best recipe.

Hats Glorious hats

This is one of two hats bound for an exhibition in Manchester's costume gallery, Platt Hall which is re-opening 13th March.
Both hats are very different this one being made from a sinamay called Gracia which I have hand frayed(see picture) before sculpting into separate shapes.
Each piece has then been sewn together.
The soft wire brim hangs down softly over the left eye.No winking required.
I have rolled the edges around a very small curling tongue to soften the blunt edge.
So what do you think.? My other hat is made from soft felt and is VERY different, photo's to follow in a few days.
Hope the general public enjoy looking.
I am going to be in some very salubrious company.No name dropping please.

Birdcage veil

Very much in all the glossy magazines at the moment are birdcage veils otherwise known as merry widow veiling.
My bow is silky grey with black spots, and has a wide tooth comb to keep it nice and secure.
Veiling comes in many colours and weights to create different looks.

My Valentine

Adding a dash of Valentine's charm to my window today, not quite displayed all my items but it looks good so far.
Tempting for all the lonely or not so lonely hearts passing by.
One or two options for washing up in I think.?
Add spectacular marigolds(washing up gloves) and you'll be set to go.

Sparkle and shine

This began as an image in a clients head and then I had make that image real. NO pressure then.
I ordered the coloured beads and crystals and began to make a template of the main shape.
Little be little it started to look like my sketch.A small sigh of relief at this point.
I then had to thread and thread and thread all those tiny beads which were woven in and out of the frame.
It took me HOURS and Hours but when finished looked amazing.
Fitting it to the headband and keeping it secure was another thing all together, but after a few changes in design it worked.The band was covered in the spare material of the clients dress.
She was delighted with it and it looked fantastic on.
Think I'll leave beading projects alone for a couple of weeks.!!

Royal Flush

This Royal Blue felt hat has been hand sculptured into shape and then machine sewn to create a dome.To keep the edge firm I have sewn in brim reed.
Shell buttons have been sewn on both sides adding detail and shine.
It sits easily on the head and can be worn any way you choose just keep turning for a new style.

It's been so cold here that everyone has needed a warm hat,even the self proclaimed NON Hat wearers, so last two weeks in the shop have been BUSY.

Felt is such a great material to work with.Just steam and shape, well just about.!

Hello and happy new year.
I've had a break since Christmas as my battery was empty.!
Recharged and ready to go again with lots of new projects in the pipeline that includes two hats for an exhibition in Manchester.I Will take pictures of their progress.
In the meantime here's something to keep you warm. A hand knitted triangle with a button hole and shell button.
Wear as an outdoor scarf or over a jumper for extra warmth.

Monochrome Girl

Peach bloom felt is very very soft and used for high quality hat making.These two cocktail hats have been hand pleated and sewn to create soft sculptured design.
I also used two small cut pieces for a trim on a pinstripe trilby.

Fire cracker

I have been busy making a few November inspired fascinators,this red one is from a sinamay disk and black crin flute.
Several pieces are showcasing in a local Charity fashion show this evening, with other red hot colours in the collection I hope they will create a bang.!

Who cares if it rains when you have this little number to wear.Turn a few heads,keep dry and look damn good in the process.
Not for shrinking violets but also the hat for bad hair days.
Lined with a damson violet to keep you warm.

It's in the BAG

This hand knitted alpaca wool bag was washed on a hot wash,which made it considerably smaller than before.
I added roses and a snap twist lock.
The straps are cut and sewn from embossed velvet.Very decadent don't you think.?
Fairly time heavy to make but the finised item is very pleasing.
Not too pricey £58.
It could be yours.!!!!! as this is very postable.

Clutch that

A little clutch bag, always popular.This one is in a soft grey wool very soft but strong too.The gunmetal frame sets off the colour perfectly.The tricky bit is applying the glue to the frame and then the material.Close your eyes and pray.!!!

winter warmers

It's starting to get chilly again so thought I had better add a few knits to the shop.
This cowl neckwarmer is knitted in mohair yarn and comes with a little coin purse/lipstick wallet.
So get out your needles and start clicking on the otherhand you could just get someone to buy you one.

Working on a velour felt [VERY SOFT) animal print little cocktail hat for the shop.
Not quite sure how I will trim it but I love the shape,would team well with a 1940s style suit don't you think?
